A Cool Thing I Didn't Know

I've been watching season 6 of Emergency! on Netflix and did some reading about the show. I was wondering if Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tighe did much ad-libbing in scenes where they treated victims because sometimes those scenes don't really sound scripted. Apparently both actors, to prepare for the show, took the actual paramedic training course, stopping short of certification. How neat is that? Sometimes when they did the rescue scenes, it really was unscripted - they just provided whatever dialogue would be appropriate for the scene.

It's funny - when I was 10, I thought Johnny Gage was such a charmer and Roy DeSoto was plain and boring. Captain Stanley wasn't even on my radar. Now, I still like Johnny but he crosses over into annoying very quickly, I think Roy is funny - a great straight man - and Captain Stanley! He's moved from not even on my radar to favorite character. What a difference a few decades make!

I will always love Emergency!

100 Things

I've been neglecting my LJ so I've decided to commit to something (sort of) that should keep me posting at least once or twice a week. I don't want to officially sign up for the 100 Things challenge (that's where the "sort of" commitment comes in) but I am going to do it unofficially. I plan on writing about "100 Books I Love (Or Really Like), In No Particular Order." I don't think I'll have trouble coming up with 100 books - the more I think about it, the more I come up with. (And this'll be way more productive than spending my summer playing Jewel Quest Heritage. Not that I'm going to stop playing Jewel Quest Heritage!)

A Chicken Named Franny

I was just telling Irish about a (soft) news story I read the other day about a hen that gave birth to a live chick. The chick hatched inside the hen and the egg was destroyed but the chick was born live. The unfortunate hen didn't survive the experience. I told him that sounds like some kind of chicken horror story. "It's the kind of movie chickens watch on Friday night when they want a good scare while they're eating popcorn. Can't you just see it? They're watching the movie and one of them says, 'Yeah, you think it's just a movie but let my tell you about my Aunt Franny!'" And Irish started laughing and said, "You're silly! A chicken named Franny?"

That made me laugh so hard. I finally said, "I just spun a whole story about chickens watching a horror movie and the only thing you find silly is that I named one of them Franny?"

"Yep."

I love my husband.

A Night to Remember

Just finished watching what is probably the best movie made about the Titanic. It's not big and splashy like the 1997 movie but is generally considered more historically accurate than that one or any of the others that have been made. It's very good, based on the book of the same name by Walter Lord, which was itself based on interviews with survivors and years of research. I'm in the middle of the book - reading it my Kindle. It was the Kindle book of the day a few days ago and was only $1.99. (I can't help thinking I have an old paperback copy around here somewhere as well, but I'm not certain.

I remember watching this movie on tv with my dad when I was around 6 and again with him about 20 years later. I think this might be the first time I've seen the whole thing from beginning to end, though. (There are scenes which I remember vividly from the first time I saw it.)

I'm Here! (For a minute or two.) What'd I miss?

Yep, that's about the extent of this entry - I think this my first this year. I only have one class this semester but I'm also doing my practicum (internship) and, while I have much less homework, I also have much less free time. Haven't been on LJ in a couple of weeks and I know I haven't commented in ages. This weekend, I hope I can find some time to go back and catch up, but I probably won't try to comment on everything. If I missed something big, let me know!

No classes this summer - I'm so glad! It'll be a nice break (I've had classes year round since 2008, with the exception of the summer of 2009) but I still have plenty to do to be ready to graduate in December. I intend to read a lot of fiction as well.

Happy Birthday!

[info]jaded_jamie, happy 30-10th! Remember that tv ad with Linda Evans several years back? "Forty isn't fatal." It's true! Take it from someone who's been here for awhile. Plus you're in great company - my middle sister and Ricardo Montalban. Very cool. I hope you have a fantastic year ahead.

'Cause surely this is a sign of an apocalypse: I was in CVS this morning and saw a Justin Bieber singing toothbrush.

(Of course, to be fair, if I'd seen a Bay City Rollers singing toothbrush when I was 12, I probably would've begged for it.)

What to do?
11th Doctor

I'm nearing the end of another semester (just about a month) and nearing the end of library school (maybe another semester, maybe two, no more than three - that's counting the summer session, so no more than a year). I had originally planned on adding an information management certification to my degree, but now I'm thinking about dropping it. If I finish the certification, it'll be another year before I'm finished. That's yet another student loan, plus I'll have to pay two graduation fees. (Yes, really.) If I don't finish the certification, I'd be done no later than August, possibly by May. I won't be able to add "Certification in Information Management" to my resume, but I can still list plenty of tech classes. I'm leaning toward dropping it, mostly for financial reasons. As a friend of mine, who dropped the certification (also for financial reasons) pointed out, I can tell people what I know and what I can do, and it's the MLIS that libraries are looking for. Read more... )

I wouldn't want to be a kid again - I much prefer adulthood - but I have to admit, sometimes it's not all bad when someone else tells you what to do.
